Students' Talents and Abilities are Recognized

The S.T.A.R. program is designed to target those students who have mastered areas of the regular curriculum and are able to be challenged at a higher level.  Students, who have been identified, as well as those who have a talent in a particular area, participate in small group classes or within the regular classroom.  Many activities, special projects, and additional contests (Spelling Bee, Science Fair, Word Power Challenge, and Word Masters) are open to all students.

Character Education

There is no doubt that character can be taught!  Indeed, most children learn character from their parents and other influential adults.  At Kerkstra Elementary School, our goal is to emphasize and repeat lessons being taught at home.  Over the course of the academic year, our character education program will focus on various character traits through the use of grade level lessons and whole school activities.  Bulletin boards will remind the kids about the traits that were discussed.
